Medial Branch Nerve Blocks for back and neck pain and arthritis
Medial branch nerves are located in the spine and carry signals of pain from facet joints to the brain. Pain can run anywhere along the spine including the lower back and neck. The medial branch nerve block procedure is where anesthetic is injected where the damaged facet joint is located, but typically several levels of the spine are injected in once injection. If pain relief is immediate after the injection, then the source of the pain is determined. If not then the processes will be repeated using another facet joint.
